Comparison
SentinelOne vs McAfee Total Protection
The short version
McAfee Total Protection is competent consumer antivirus with useful extras, priced per household. It is a reasonable purchase for personal machines. It is not built for the problem of protecting endpoints you do not personally sit at, which is where EDR and a console start to matter.
Pricing
Verified from public sources as of 2026-08-24. Note the billing units differ.
| Product | Class | Price | Billed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crimzonhost (SentinelOne Control) | EDR | $7 /endpoint/mo ($75/yr) | Per endpoint |
| Crimzonhost (SentinelOne Complete) | EDR + Deep Visibility | $10 /endpoint/mo ($110/yr) | Per endpoint |
| McAfee Total Protection | Consumer AV suite | ~$39.99 first yr (10 users ~$149.99/yr) | Per household |
Signatures and heuristics versus behaviour
Consumer antivirus leans on recognising known-bad files, updated constantly, plus heuristics. That works well against malware already in circulation. EDR watches what a process does once running, which is what catches ransomware that has never been seen before and therefore has no signature.
Nobody is watching the household licence
McAfee reports to the person at the keyboard. If an employee dismisses a warning, you find out later or not at all. A console tells you an agent is unhealthy, disabled or missing — which is exactly the state an attacker wants it in.
Undoing an attack
McAfee will remove malware. It will not restore the files that malware encrypted. SentinelOne's rollback can, and for a business without tested backups that difference is the whole ballgame.
When McAfee Total Protection is the better choice
We would rather you buy the right thing than buy from us. McAfee Total Protection wins if:
- Personal or family machines where per-household pricing is far cheaper than per-endpoint.
- You want identity protection and a VPN in the same subscription.
- You would never use a management console, so paying for one is waste.
- Simplicity matters more than forensic capability.
When we’re the better choice
You run a handful of machines for a real business, you want behavioural detection and one-click rollback, and you don’t want a sales call or a seat minimum to get it. SentinelOne Control is $7.00 per endpoint per month and Complete is $10.00, starting at one endpoint.
Worth saying plainly: we are not a managed security provider. We supply the licence, the console and the documentation. We do not watch your alerts or respond to incidents.
